Post subject: Can jinn possess people Reply with quote

Assalamualaikum Rahamatullahi wabarakathahu

dear Ahmed

This in regards to the people who thinks they can be possessed by jinns

to prove their argument they give the following verses form quran

002.275
YUSUFALI: Those who devour usury will not stand except as stand one whom the Evil one by his touch Hath driven to madness. That is because they say: "Trade is like usury," but Allah hath permitted trade and forbidden usury. Those who after receiving direction from their Lord, desist, shall be pardoned for the past; their case is for Allah (to judge); but those who repeat (The offence) are companions of the Fire: They will abide therein (for ever).

and your translation read as this

Those who eat usury, they cannot stand except as one standing whom the devil has beaten into madness. That is because they said: Trading is like usury. But Allah has made trading lawful and prohibited usury. And whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists, then he may have what has already passed and his affair rests with Allah. And whoever returns (to usury), then those are the companions of the fire, they are therein abiding.
[Al Quran ; 2:275]

one more verse in this regard is

038.041
YUSUFALI: Commemorate Our Servant Job. Behold he cried to his Lord: "The Evil One has afflicted me with distress and suffering!"

and your translation is

And remember Our servant Ayub, when he called to his Lord (saying): Indeed, the devil has touched me with hardship and torture.
[Al Quran ; 38:41]

i want your view point on this topic , Ahmed

Salam dear brother

Thanks for opening a new subject to discuss. I was sort of getting bored with the repeated subjects that I keep discussing all over the places.

parvez_mushtaq wrote:

First of all, I do not believe that humans can be possessed by Jinn, I tend to believe that humans may be possessed by Shaitan, and as you know Shaitan is a bad Jinn, therefore for a jinn to possess a human, the jinn must be a bad jinn, i.e. a Shaitan.

On the other hand I also disagree with most people to the meaning of possessed by Shaitan, I firmly believe that the expression possessed by Shaitan does not mean the human who is possessed is crazy, rather it means that the human who is possessed OBEY at all times what the Shaitan commands him

It is like the humans who always OBEY the shaitan, are being slaves to him, i.e. they are possessed by him.

If their argument is based on the notion that anyone who is possessed by Jinn is mentally (physically) ill, then I totally reject such notion.

What I believe these words means: stand one whom the Evil one by his touch Hath driven to madness , that the devil successfully enslaved a human to a degree that the humans always obey the devil.

I am still working on it, so there might be some mistakes.

I believe that the word beaten is more accurate which implies that some humans always obey the shaitan.

I should make my translation consistent for which I am working hard on it, in fact I decided to make a third draft after I finish the second draft by the end of this year inshaallah

I believe the word beaten may be more accurate to the context of obeying the devil all the times

So I do not believe that mentally ill humans are possessed by the devils, what I believe that the devils can do is to make some magic to separate a husband from his wife, this is as far as I believe in the capability of the bad jinn to hurt the humans physically, I believe most of the damage done by the devils is through commands to be obeyed, and in this case the expression possessed by the devil is very accurate for me

Take care

Salam bro

Good to see you

Look man, this is not a serious matter for me, if I am wrong, please correct me, yes I agree with you that the ayah above states so, but I believe that the jinn can affect human by driving them mad concerning belief not concerning day to day life, I believe the Quran stated that there will be no blame upon mad people, while we read in the ayah above that being touched by jinn is like a curse from Allah.

I will try to look further on the subject through the Quran, but if I am proven wrong regarding this issue then I will be very fine with that

Take care

ahmed
there are two things
one , is there any blame on mad people
two, can jinn make people mad
and of course , madness may be due to any reason and not only by jinn

we are not here to discuss about the blame on mad people
my point is , can jinn make people mad
and as the answer to this quran confirms that the touch of jinn can make people mad
in other words, jinn can posses people

Ok mate

If that is the issue then I agree with you that according to the Quran, some people may be desrving to be possessed by jinn

But the question remains, is being possessed by jinn, means being mad?

Cheers

not always ,it is one of his abilities
his possession can make people mad as well as he can whisper as he did to Adam and eve
or he can afflict people as he did to job
or ha can made the deeds of people of fair seeming as he did to 'Ad and Tham????????????????????????????»d tough they were intelligent

and this list goes on
we are not going to discuss all his abilities cos this will be beyond the scope of this thread
since the present topic is vast and we are at the ground level ,pl restrict only to this ability of satan making people mad

Ok mate, so what do you think of a person who was made made by jinn and committed horrible sins, like killing other people, would that person be held accountable by Allah?

parvez_mushtaq wrote:

I have no issues with jinn whispering to humans, however I still have a small problem believing that Jinn can make others mad, while I do agree that the verse you quoted implies so, but I think we need to further study the key words in the following verse:

2:275 الذين ياكلون الربا لا يقومون الا كما يقوم الذي يتخبطه الشيطان من المس ذلك بانهم قالوا انما البيع مثل الربا واحل الله البيع وحرم الربا فمن جاءه موعظه من ربه فانتهى فله ما سلف وامره الى الله ومن عاد فاولئك اصحاب النار هم فيها خالدون

These words الذي يتخبطه الشيطان من المس , Allazi Yatakhabatahu Alshaitan Mn Almass, i.e. whom the devil has beaten into madness, may imply at first glance that the shaitan make people mad, however if you read the first words in the verse, Allah is giving us a metaphor of those who eat Riba (interest) as one who is being touched by the devil, certainly those who take Riba cannot be mentally crazy, I think it mean spiritually crazy

The following verse gives strong ground to my argument:

7:201 ان الذين اتقوا اذا مسهم طائف من الشيطان تذكروا فاذا هم مبصرون

Indeed, those who fear (Allah), when an impulse from the devil touches them, they remember and at once they can see.

Which is talking about the pious people who when they are touched by the devil, they remember Allah, which certainly does not imply that they have been mad.

The third verse also gives solid ground to my argument:

38:41 واذكر عبدنا ايوب اذ نادي ربه اني مسني الشيطان بنصب وعذاب

And remember Our servant Ayub, when he called to his Lord (saying): Indeed, the devil has touched me with hardship and torture.

In which prophet Ayub seeks the help of Allah after he was touched by Al-Shaitan, certainly Ayub was not crazy while he was calling upon Allah.

The above three verses are the only ones talking about humans being touched by jinn (shaitan), and in all I dont see that the verses meant that those people were physically mad. So I may stand again with my argument that the devil cannot make humans physically mad, rather spiritually mad.

I think the musunderstanding may have risen from the wrong understanding to the Arabic word Mas, which is a verb, it means "to touch", and if a noun, it is commonly known in common Arabic as being physically mad, but it can certainly means being disturbed

parvez_mushtaq wrote:
or he can afflict people as he did to job

Yes as we have seen in 38:41 above, but prophet Job was in no way physically mad, in fact while he was still suffering from the devil's touch, he was still calling upon Allah to help him out of it, and that cannot be done by a madman

parvez_mushtaq wrote:
or ha can made the deeds of people of fair seeming as he did to 'Ad and Tham????????????????????????????»d tough they were intelligent

Yes, by decorating it to them, which the Quran explained numerous times, but that does not mean that they are physically mad, rather spiritualy mad (in a metaphor sense)

parvez_mushtaq wrote:
and this list goes on

Sure, like making people to forget

parvez_mushtaq wrote:
we are not going to discuss all his abilities cos this will be beyond the scope of this thread

But I brough the only three verses in the Quran which talk about people being touched by Shaitan, none really implied that any of those people were phycially mad, only the ones who take interest were described in a metaphoric sense that they are spiritually mad

parvez_mushtaq wrote:
since the present topic is vast and we are at the ground level ,pl restrict only to this ability of satan making people mad

Sure, and I brought the 3 verse which talked about some people being touched by Shaitan, please tell me what you think about these verses

At the end of the day, it is not any jinn who possess people, rather bad jinns who do so, and bad jinns are decribed as being Shaitans

Take care

exactly, this is a metaphor
cos , riba eater is a denier and the state of denier is like as explained in

036.052
YUSUFALI: They will say: "Ah! Woe unto us! Who hath raised us up from our beds of repose?"... (A voice will say:) "This is what (Allah) Most Gracious had promised. And true was the word of the messengers!"

021.097
YUSUFALI: Then will the true promise draw nigh (of fulfilment): then behold! the eyes of the Unbelievers will fixedly stare in horror: "Ah! Woe to us! we were indeed heedless of this; nay, we truly did wrong!"

and their state will be

Link

(may ALLAH protect us and make us die as a believers )

and regarding 7:201 and 38:41 i told you earlier , satan not only make people mad but can afflict them as well as cheat (29-38 ) them and more over even human can rule him as did by Solomon(27 - 39)

so , with out any doubt , ALLAH says , saitan can make people mad

Salam mate

I have seen this video before, and many more by Muslims in churches before they became christians, I can show you a few, it all seems acting to me, I do not believe these videos

It is like hypnosis for me, you are aware of what is going on, and only living it by acting

BTW, I am a type of person who can never be hypnotised

Now, when you say Sjaitan can make people mad, do you mean which one of the followings:

1- Physically mad (crazy, insane, etc etc)

2- Spiritually mad (i.e. fuked in the religion only, but they are still smart and concieous of what they do concerning their worldly life)

?

I have to go to bed, so I will reply to you tomorrow inshaallah

Good night

i think i have not presented correctly

let me put this way

the ayah 2-275 talks about riba eaters
and it states how they will be on the day of judgment
as per this ayah , ALLAH says , riba eaters will be as like people possessed by jinn on the day of judgment
my aim of posting that video is to show the state of people who eat riba
if this(video) is the state of people who are possessed by jinn then this will be state of people who eat riba on the day of judgment
if this is not their state , then pl tell me how will be the disbelievers on that day of judgment as per quran

AhmedBahgat wrote:
2- Spiritually mad (i.e. fuked in the religion only, but they are still smart and concieous of what they do concerning their worldly life)

?

i wonder why you are asking this question to me
the ayah 2-275 clearly talks about day of judgment and nothing to do with earthly life
so there is no question of spiritual madness

AhmedBahgat wrote:

your are very fast ,ahmed , we will come to this point later

AhmedBahgat wrote:

the purpose of posting the video is to show the state of disbelievers on the day of judgment

moreover , i think you haven't seen people who are possessed in your real life

i will tell my own personnel experience

Few years back, one of cousin sisters had this problem
In those days, like you, even I thought these things are bull s..
When I visited to see her, I clearly thought it was nothing but acting
So , I took her to a Psychiatrist who happen to my friend and one of the best in chennai
He suggested to make tests like eeg and other tests
Which we did and after careful examination he said there is nothing to with brain
When I asked him , is it acting
Then he posed a question, why a human will torture herself/himself for days
And after that he gave an explanation for this
It is nothing but the excessive energy produced in the body
For this he gave an example
Suppose a mad dog chases me, I run without thinking anything, probably with a speed that would fetch gold for India If I run in Olympics
So, I get energy to run and the cause was that mad dog
Suppose, I get that energy but dog is not there then what happens
This was the case of my cousin; she got excessive energy without any cause
And its outlet is her abnormal behavior
When I asked him how she gets that energy, he said ?????????????????????¢??I don?????????????????????¢??t know"
and only solution was sedatives
he gave her sedatives and when it will cured no one knows
it may take a year or more or she may live with it for rest of her life

I found this on another web site, looks like sunni site, it is interesting answer to the same question raised in here: Can jinn possess humans?

------------------

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear questioner, thanks for your question and we earnestly implore Allah to guide us all to the best and to reward us generously for our good deeds.

Scholars differ in opinion concerning the question in hand. Some say that jinn may possess human beings and some say this is not true. In fact, this question will remain controversial. Those who do not believe in the jinn possession need to reasonably explain the symptoms that the said-possessed people suffer from. On the other hand, those who adopt the other opinion take the strange cases of the said-possessed people as concrete evidence of their view, exploiting the fact that people are psychologically prepared to believe that jinn can possess their bodies.

In this regard, we would like to cite for you the following fatwa issued by the eminent Muslim scholar Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi:

Jinn are a kind of being that we cannot see as they are in reality. Allah Almighty says about Satan: ?????????????????????¢??Lo! He seeth you, he and his tribe, from whence ye see him not.?????????????????????¢?????????????????????? (Al-A`raf: 27)

However, jinn may appear in human form, as happened during the Prophet?????????????????????¢??s time when a jinn in a human form came to Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) while the latter was guarding the zakah of Ramadan according to the Prophet?????????????????????¢??s order. Seeing the jinn gathering food of sadaqah in his hands (without permission), Abu Hurayrah caught him and was about to take him to the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him), but he set him free when the jinn gave him a piece of advice. When Abu Hurayrah told this story to the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him), he (peace and blessing be upon him) said, ?????????????????????¢??that was a jinn, and he was truthful about the piece of advice, though he was a liar in fact?????????????????????¢?????????????????????? ( Reported by Al-Bukhari).

There are many people who claim that they have seen jinn or that they have relations with them, and some may even say they are married to a jinn. In fact, many of these claims are false. Moreover, many of those who claim that they are possessed by jinn do, in effect, suffer from psychological disorders such as schizophrenia and the like, and jinn have nothing to do with such disorders.
Moreover, Sheikh Faysal Mawlawi vice-chairman of the European Council for Fatwa and Research, further states:

Scholars have differed regarding jinn?????????????????????¢??s possession of human beings and their ability to harm and afflict them with diseases and pains. Some scholars do believe that this may happen and cite as evidence for their view Almighty Allah?????????????????????¢??s words: ?????????????????????¢??And make mention (O Muhammad) of Our bondman Job, when he cried unto his Lord (saying): Lo! The devil doth afflict me with distress and torment‏.?????????????????????¢?????????????????????? (Saad: 41)

This group of scholars have explained this verse literally and thus said that what afflicted Prophet Job (peace and blessings be upon him) in his body, possessions, and family was caused by the Satan.

On the other hand, some other scholars are of the opinion that jinn cannot possess human beings, nor can they harm them, for Almighty Allah says: ?????????????????????¢??Feeble indeed is the cunning of Satan.?????????????????????¢?????????????????????? (An-Nisaa?????????????????????¢??: 76) According to this group of scholars, had jinn possession and jinn?????????????????????¢??s ability to harm people been true, people might have confused jinn?????????????????????¢??s deeds with Almighty Allah?????????????????????¢??s.

Moreover, those scholars have explained the verse concerning Prophet Job (peace and blessings be upon him) in a way that goes in line with the other verses and hadiths that indicate that Satan cannot harm or influence true believers. According to them, if this is the case with true believers in general, it should also be the case with prophets, with the more reason.

In Al-Jami` li-Ahkam Al-Qur?????????????????????¢??an, vol. 15, Imam Al-Qurtubi mentioned that Imam Ibn Al-`Arabi and other scholars have explained the verse in question as that what afflicted Prophet Job (peace and blessings be upon him) in his body, wealth, and family was destined by Almighty Allah, yet Prophet Job (peace and blessings be upon him) attributed it to Satan out of extreme politeness to attribute such afflictions to Almighty Allah.

According to At-Tafseer Al-Kabir by Imam Al-Fakhr Ar-Razi, some scholars also explained this verse on the same basis, that is, the afflictions that occurred to Prophet Job (peace and blessings be upon him) were destined by Almighty Allah. Yet those scholars were of the opinion that Satan would whisper to Prophet Job reminding him of the many blessings that Almighty Allah caused him to lose so that Prophet Job (peace and blessings be upon him) might lament his losses and become displeased with Allah?????????????????????¢??s destiny for him. Prophet Job would resist such evil whispers, but Satan remained whispering those evil thoughts to him in such a strong way that Prophet Job was afraid to succumb to them. So, he prayed to Almighty Allah to help him get rid of such whispers, and that is what is referred to by ?????????????????????¢??distress and torment?????????????????????¢?????????????????????? in Almighty Allah?????????????????????¢??s words: ?????????????????????¢??And make mention (O Muhammad) of Our bondman Job, when he cried unto his Lord (saying): Lo! The devil doth afflict me with distress and torment.?????????????????????¢?????????????????????? (Saad: 41)

There are two other verses in the Glorious Qur?????????????????????¢??an that tackle Satan?????????????????????¢??s influence on people; one deals with this influence indirectly and the other directly.

The first verse is ?????????????????????¢??Those who fear Allah, when a thought of evil from Satan assaults them, bring Allah to remembrance, when lo they see (aright).?????????????????????¢?????????????????????? (Al-A`raf: 201)

The influence here refers to the Satan?????????????????????¢??s whispering to people so that they may commit sins; it has nothing to do with the jinn?????????????????????¢??s possession of human beings.

The second verse is ?????????????????????¢??Those who swallow usury cannot rise up save as he ariseth whom the devil hath prostrated by (his) touch. That is because they say: Trade is just like usury; whereas Allah permitteth trading and forbiddeth usury. He unto whom an admonition from his Lord cometh, and (he) refraineth (in obedience thereto), he shall keep (the profits of) that which is past, and his affair (henceforth) is with Allah. As for him who returneth (to usury), such are rightful owners of the Fire. They will abide therein‏.?????????????????????¢?????????????????????? (Al-Baqarah: 275)

Imam Al-Fakhr Ar-Razi?????????????????????¢??s Explanation

According to Imam Al-Fakhr Ar-Razi, there are two explanations of this verse. The first is held by Abu `Ali Al- Gubba?????????????????????¢??ie (a follower of Al-Mu`tazilah). Al-Gubba?????????????????????¢??ie believes that Satan?????????????????????¢??s prostrating people by touch here refers to harming them via the evil whispers he tries to inculcate in their minds. It is this kind of harm that Prophet Job meant when he said, according to the Qur?????????????????????¢??an: ?????????????????????¢??Lo! The devil doth afflict me with distress and torment.?????????????????????¢?????????????????????? (Saad: 41)

Such evil whispers affect people of weak faith and cause them to have epilepsy. This is because those people are too weak to resist Satan?????????????????????¢??s whispers; they are in this case like cowards who faint from fear when left alone in a dark place. In this sense, Satan?????????????????????¢??s whispers have no influence on people of strong faith.

Thus, Al-Gubba?????????????????????¢??ie, reasoning the issue and citing many bits of evidence from the Qur?????????????????????¢??an and the Sunnah, refutes the claim that Satan might have far-reaching influence on people. According to him, the only influence that Satan might have is through the evil thoughts he whispers to people.

The second explanation of the verse, according to Imam Al-Fakhr Ar-Razi, is presented by Al-Qaffal (a scholar from the Shafi`i school). Al-Qaffal is of the opinion that people used to attribute epilepsy to Satan and jinn in general. They also used to describe ugly things and unfortunate events as likened to Satan or attributed to him.

Based on this belief of people, Almighty Allah describes the bad condition of usurers as that of he who arises as if prostrated by the devil?????????????????????¢??s touch. In this sense also, Allah describes the Tree of Zaqqum that springs out of the bottom of the Hellfire saying: ?????????????????????¢??Its crop is as it were the heads of devils.?????????????????????¢??????????????????????(As-Saffat: 65; Tafseer Al-Fakhr Ar-Razi, vol. 7, pp. 88-89).

Az-Zamakhshari?????????????????????¢??s Explanation of the Same Verse

Az-Zamakhshari said in his Al-Kashaf, vol. 1, p. 399: The verse ?????????????????????¢??Those who swallow usury ?????????????????????¢??????????????????????¦?????????????????????¢?? (Al-Baqarah: 275) likens the condition of usurers when they get up, to that of those hit by jinn. This comes in line with the Arabs?????????????????????¢?? belief that jinn may hit human beings and knock them down, and may even cause them mental disorder. There are many stories related by the Arabs about people seeing jinn with their very eyes. Hence, denying the people?????????????????????¢??s probability of seeing jinn is to the Arab like denying seeing concrete and material things around one.

Abu As-Su`ud was also of the same opinion as Az-Zamakhshari. This is obvious in his book: Tafseer Abu As-Su`ud. It seems to me, furthermore, that he borrowed such opinion from Az-Zamakhshari.

Al-Qurtubi?????????????????????¢??s Explanation of the Verse

Al-Qurtubi said, ?????????????????????¢??This verse clearly refutes the opinion of those who deny the jinn?????????????????????¢??s capability of harming human beings?????????????????????¢?????????????????????? (Al-Jami` Al-Kabir, vol. 3, p. 355).

Al-Alusi?????????????????????¢??s Explanation of the Verse

The eminent scholar Al-Alusi said that usurers would rise up on the Day of Judgment like those who are strongly hit by jinn in this world.

Al-Alusi also quoted in one of his writings the scholar Ibn `Atiyyah as saying that the verse in question likens usurers?????????????????????¢?? keenness on accumulating money and their running after this end to the condition of unstable people who move in such great haste that one may call them mad.

Al-Alusi commented on this opinion saying, ?????????????????????¢??It is obvious that this opinion contradicts what people in general hold in this respect.?????????????????????¢??????????????????????

Al-Alusi also tackled the point of jinn?????????????????????¢??s beating some people and knocking them down and declared his agreement to this view. Furthermore, he strongly opposed the views of Al-Mu`tazilah and Al-Qaffal, who denied the jinn?????????????????????¢??s having any influence on human beings. They cite as evidence of their view what Satan said according to the Qur?????????????????????¢??an: ?????????????????????¢??And I had no power over you.?????????????????????¢?????????????????????? (Ibrahim: 22)

Al-Alusi commented that Satan?????????????????????¢??s saying he has no power according to this verse refers to his inability to have thorough control or to enslave human beings, not to his inability to harm them in general.

According to Al-Alusi, there is much evidence from Shari`ah that contradicts this opinion of Al-Mu`tazilah and Al-Qaffal. For example, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ?????????????????????¢??When any human being is born, Satan touches it and thus it cries.?????????????????????¢?????????????????????? Another version of this hadith goes ?????????????????????¢??When any human being is born, Satan touches him at both sides of the body.?????????????????????¢?????????????????????? The only exception in this regard is Mary and her son Jesus (peace and blessings be upon both of them), because Mary?????????????????????¢??s mother prayed to Almighty Allah as reported in the Qur?????????????????????¢?? an: ?????????????????????¢??Lo! I crave Thy protection for her and for her offspring from Satan the outcast.?????????????????????¢?????????????????????? (Aal `Imran: 36)‏

There is also a hadith reported to the effect that the jinn kidnapped some person during the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and then returned him. Later that person reported, ?????????????????????¢??A bird like a camel came to me and carried me on a small feather of it.?????????????????????¢??????????????????????

According to Al-Alusi, the predecessors and Sunni people believe that what these hadiths refer to are true events, and explaining them in a non-literal way complicates matters. It is the strict school of Al-Mu`tazilah and the like that tend to resort to complex explanations of this kind. Reviewing hadiths reported about jinn proves true their capability to harm people.

This part from the above article is pure rubbish:
